How To Stick With New Years Resolutions

Did you know that the goal to “read more” consistently makes the Top 10 of New Years Resolutions? But something funny happens by mid-January; we start to notice dust collecting on the cover of the new book we have by our bedside and we realize we haven’t made it past the introduction yet. It’s not that we don’t want to start new habits, we do. We write our resolutions down, we tell our friends what we’re going to do and we even visualize our future selves being well-read. But for many of us, our plans go awry and we never build enough momentum to see the progress we’d imagined.

Sound familiar? Creating a new habit comes down to 4 key ingredients: you must make the habit obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying. To read more about habit building, check out one of my earlier blog posts here. So let’s continue with the example of “reading more”. Make it obvious: put the book in plain sight and ideally somewhere where you normally sit. Make it attractive: if you love to travel find a book that takes place in a part of the world you’ve visited. Make it easy: don’t put you book next to your favorite TV chair, that’s a hard decision to make time after time, try to find a place where you won’t have competition for your attention. Make it satisfying: habit-pairing can be a powerful tool. Try to build momentum by rewarding yourself after you read. Eg. “I’ll read 10 pages and then I’ll play with my kids.”

Good news, we’re here to help you stick with your New Years resolutions and help you fulfill your goal to “read more”. Starting in January we will be launching the CrossFit Sanitas Book Club! Here’s what you need to know:
